Hi, Jenny –
I’ve been told that plaid is the pattern to wear for the winter.  However, I’m far from a size 0 and would like your opinion on whether that design would call attention to my figure in a flattering way or would I look silly.
Thanks from –
Pondering on Plaid

Dear Pondering on Plaid,

Thank you for your letter! I understand your concerns, but there is always a way to customize a trend to make it work for you.

It’s true that plaid is everywhere this season. It’s a versatile print that comes in a wide variety of colors and pattern sizes. Most of the plaids this season are tartan plaids (as opposed to gingham, houndstooth or check), which consist of matching horizontal and vertical patterns that meet at a 90-degree angle. The size and color of the tartan can vary greatly – a large tartan in bright colors will be very attention-grabbing, while a smaller tartan in a muted color palette will draw less notice.

If you don’t feel comfortable fully embracing the plaid trend, accessories can be a great way to incorporate the look into your wardrobe without getting too crazy. A plaid scarf or a plaid bag will look great at any size. Another option is to pair plaid with garments in dark solid colors to minimize areas you might want to downplay as I did when I paired up Torrid’s Plaid Reversible Bomber Jacket with a black sheath dress and black tights.

I firmly believe that anyone can wear plaid – no matter their size or shape. You just have to find the right plaid for you!

Much love,
