My son and I went to the American Visionary Art Museum on Saturday. It was my first time using my VIP pass as part of the Baltimore Buzz Brigade. The AVAM is my favorite place in Baltimore, so it makes sense that I went there first (even though I was there this time last year).

We arrived to find a flea market in full swing. I wasn’t expecting it, but it was a nice surprise. My son stocked up on some vintage Spider-man action figures, while I picked up a couple of cute prints from local Baltimore artist M. Mauro. There were lots of fun and interesting things on display, but our budget was much smaller than our desire.

The current exhibition is ALL THINGS ROUND: Galaxies, Eyeballs & Karma. You can’t take pictures inside the museum, but you can see a slideshow of selected images on the AVAM website here.

We spent a few hours in the museum. I easily could have spent more time there, but the kiddo was getting antsy. It was such a beautiful day that we decided to cross the street to walk along the Inner Harbor for a bit. But first we had to stop at the gift shop. Of course.

I’ve visited Baltimore hundreds of times and even worked there daily for years, but there are still parts of it that were new to me. Since we were approaching the Harbor from Federal Hill, we passed two monuments that I had never noticed before. Each is beautiful in its own way and filled me with a sense of peace and calm while still surrounded by the hustle and bustle of a busy Baltimore afternoon.

It was a great day. I highly recommend you visit the AVAM if you’re ever in town! Or even if you have to plan a special trip just to see it. Totally worth it.
